for florida: reeds & moon

secrets in the reeds
the sun fades at the horizon line
I face the crisp edge of wind
and visualize seeds disperse
into hazy clouds of fog
hanging over the pond
the dead leaves scatter and fall
like pages torn from an old book
I said goodbye to the scarecrow today

once I received a letter from a witch
a ritual; her saltwater tears anointed each word
I never wrote her back because
she's in love with you too
and I felt sorry for her, almost kindred
I lit candles in your honor on an altar of despair
smudging the wax and ash in loops and circles
and now that you're gone without a trace
I live each day in a moonless phase
